Age-related Increase in Astrocytes in the Visual Area V2 of the Cat

چکیده
We determined age-related changes of astrocytes in the visual area V2 of young (2–3 years old) and old (12–13 years old) cats. An immunohistochemical method was applied to demonstrate glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)-immunoreactive astrocytes. Under the microscope, the densities of the astrocytes and the diameters of the somata were calculated, and the processes of the astrocytes were also counted. Compared with the young adults, the old cats showed significantly denser astrocytes in both the cortex and medulla, accompanied with significant hypertrophy in the cell bodies, a remarkable increase in the processes, and an obvious increment in the intensity of GFAP immunoreactivity. These findings indicate a significant enhancement of astrocytic activities in the visual cortex during aging process. This enhancement might provide neuroprotective effects to the aging neurons and compensate for declining visual function in senile individuals.

Molecular differences among neurons reveal an organization of human visual cortex.
Monoclonal antibody Cat-301 recognizes a cell-surface proteoglycan on subsets of neurons in several areas of the cat and macaque monkey central nervous system. In striate and extrastriate visual cortex of the macaque, the distribution of Cat-301-positive neurons demonstrates features of cellular organization that correlate with previously described functional subdivisions. Here we show that Cat...
متن کاملThe relationship between NQO1 C609T and CAT C-262T genetic polymorphisms and the risk of age-related cataracts
Cataract is multi-factorial eye disease identified by the disturbance of the transparent ocular lens. There is significant evidence suggesting oxidative damage as a major cause of initiation and progression of numerous diseases including cataracts. NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1; OMIM: 125860) and catalase (CAT, OMIM: 115500) are antioxidant enzymes that prevent cells from oxidative str...

The present study was carried out for the antigen detection of Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) in diarrhoeic cats referred to the Veterinary Clinic of the School of Ahvaz University, in southwest Iran. Faecal samples were collected from 67 diarrhoeic household cats during 2005 to 2007. According to the age and clinical signs, the cats were divided into two groups; 6 months, hemorrhagic and ...
متن کاملAstrocytes in Molecular Layer of Cerebellum after Spatial Learning
Introduction: Previous studies have suggested that the cerebellum is a primary site of motor learning. The cerebellar cortex has a particular glial architecture with large astroglial cells. In addition, more recent works have revealed that astrocytes play a more active role in neuronal activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the number of astrocytes in the molecular layer of rat's cere...
متن کاملNeuronal responses to texture-defined form in macaque visual area V2.
Human and macaque observers can detect and discriminate visual forms defined by differences in texture. The neurophysiological correlates of visual texture perception are not well understood and have not been studied extensively at the single-neuron level in the primate brain. We used a novel family of texture patterns to measure the selectivity of neurons in extrastriate cortical area V2 of th...
